The last mayor of Sortavala, Emil Edvard Autio, was born on 26 January 1889 in the municipality if Uusikirkko in the family of blacksmith Erik Autio and Amalia Toivonen. He passed his matriculation examination in 1910 and was granted the honorary title Master of Laws with court training in 1917. He married Edith Krause (parents Andreas Krause and Vilhelmiina Starck) in 1919 and was elected the mayor of Sortavala in 1920. He remained in office until the final loss of Sortavala in 1944. In the period after Winter War after the town had been evacuated, Autio belonged to an administrative committee that together with the council and the town board aimed to manage the affairs of Sortavala. In his life, he also acted as judge of the Kitee chapter in 1945, secretary of the conscription department of the province of Vyborg 1918 to 1920, as representative in the income and property tax committee 1929 to 1940, as acting chief military judge in 1940 and as the secretary of the Sortavala Department of Finland's travel association 1920 to 1944.
