The Lutheran church was festively decorated with flowers and vines for the service held in honour of the national Lotta Svärd event in Sortavala in 1933.
The photo shows the church's altarpiece that was commissioned from artist and Master of Laws Berndt Godenhjelm in 1859. The painting is a replica of Resurrection of Christ by Raphael. Its predecessor was painted in 1837 by magistrate and master painter Carl Fredrik Blom. He was forced to touch up his painting afterwards, as the general synod found that it did not depict the faces of Christ, John the Baptist and Virgin Mary in a satisfactory manner. Alongside Robert Wilhelm Ekman, Berndt Godenhjelm was the most significant painter of altarpieces in Finland in the mid-19th century, when painters with an academic training superseded professional painters relying on a crafts tradition that Blom also counted himself among.
