After Finns had left Sortavala, the facilities of he General Hospital functioned as a military sanatorium for the Soviet forces from autumn 1944 until 1948. After that, it was turned into a military hospital that was functional until 2008. As the buildings of the General Hospital were left empty in 2008, they were looted on a number of occasions between 2009 and 2013, even though the group of buildings remained in the balance of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. Looters broke property, smashed windows and took everything they could carry, such as Finnish heaters, handrails and ceramics. On several occasions, looters and the homeless set fires inside the hospital buildings. In 2013, a wooden building from the 20th century burned down that had functioned as the headquarters of the Russian military hospital. In January 2014, a fire destroyed the main building almost in its entirety and an addition located next to it that had housed the boiler room, washroom and sauna. The incident is being investigated as arson.
The unique park area of the General Hospital developed in Dr Winter's time and recreated after the war is in a poor state. The trees and shrubs are old and in need of care. The hospital area contains rubbish and ruins. The ownership of the group of buildings is in the process of being transferred to the town of Sortavala, and a temporary security service has been arranged for the area.
