According to C.L. Engel's plan which he signed in 1837, an Alexander'smarket place was to be planned in the site of Town hall. Alexander'smarket place would have been placed between the Lutheran Church andVakkolahti bay. This plan however never came true because the people ofSortavala considered plans being too exaggerative. In 1853 the Citycouncil gave task to pharmacist E.O. Relander in order to plant treesand bushes in the market place and later by the Raatihuoneenkatu street.If a tree took root and started to grow, the pharmacist got one silverruble as a reward. The City paid him 102 rubles in total for plantingtrees in public spaces.
